Over the festive season the Kruger National Park welcomes more visitors than usual from all over South Africa and the world. All who which arrive with the hopes of seeing leopard, giraffe, elephant, cheetah and many more. Generally, the lion is on top of visitors list on animals to see in Kruger.

Lions actively hunt and travel early in the morning and right at sunset when the bushveld temperatures cool down. Because the midday heat saps their energy, a typical lion sighting during the warmer hours involves a pride lounging lazily under the dense shade of an acacia tree.
If fortune favors your game drive, you might witness a pride actively stalking prey or making a successful catch. Recently, a Shikwari Safaris tracking team experienced that ultimate stroke of safari luck, witnessing the raw power of a lion kill firsthand.
Lion Activity Timeline:
• Dawn & Dusk: Peak hunting, patrolling, and pride movement.
• Midday: Resting and conserving energy in deep shade.
• Night: High-stealth hunting and vocalizing to territory rivals.
Why Timing is Everything on a Safari Game Drive
Because lions schedule their lives around temperature drops, our expert guides time our safari departures perfectly to match these peak activity windows. Heading out into the greater Kruger ecosystem during these golden hours maximizes your chances of catching the world’s most iconic big cats on the move, rather than just sleeping in the grass.
At Shikwari Safaris, we use our deep understanding of lion pride territories to put you in the right place at the right time.

On New Year’s Day a Shikwari safari had the luck of seeing a beautiful Male Lion take down its kill, a young buffalo, just meters from the vehicle. The lion dragged its prey over the road where all the spectators watched in amazement and anticipation.

The male settled under the shade of the tree to enjoy his meal in a bit more privacy. Please follow our social channels here for regular updates.
