After months of patient searching, the Shikwari Transfers and Safaris team celebrated a major milestone on a recent Kruger Day Safari trip. We spotted a breathtakingly beautiful leopard cub.
Leopards are notoriously elusive. This makes the tracking of a cub one of the most rewarding experiences you can have in the bushveld.
The Reality of Survival in the African Bush
While tracking this cub brought immense joy to our guests, it also reminded us of the fragile nature of wildlife survival.
Originally, the mother had given birth to two cubs. However, because nature can be incredibly harsh on young apex predators, it appears the second cub unfortunately passed away. Mortality rates for wild leopard cubs hover around 50% due to larger predators like lions and hyenas. Seeing this surviving cub healthy, alert, and thriving is a true testament to the mother’s exceptional protective instincts.
Leopard Tracking Quick Facts:
• Behavior: Master of camouflage, highly solitary, and elusive.
• Cub Survival: Mothers hide cubs in dense thickets or rocky outcrops for safety.
• Safari Status: One of the most sought-after sightings of the Big Five.
Why Expert Guiding Makes All the Difference
Because leopards blend seamlessly into the dappled shade of the savanna, finding them takes immense skill, local knowledge, and persistence. Our team spent months keeping tabs on this mother’s territory, waiting for the perfect moment when she felt comfortable bringing her remaining cub into view.
At Shikwari Transfers and Safaris, we don’t just drive you through the park—we decode the tracks and behaviors of the bush to bring you face-to-face with these unforgettable moments.

The cub was spotted lounging in a beautiful and tall Jackleberry Tree. His big eyes curiously look down on the Safari Vehicle.

Leopards are rare to see, and it was such a treat to see this magical creature so close and at such a small age!
