The Kruger National Park is known for its diverse and spectacular array of animals, birds, reptiles, flora and fauna. Driving through the African bush is where you are most likely to find your big mammals and experience different animal sightings, this is what the Kruger is known for. Additionally Kruger has facilities that include main rest camps to over night hides where you can overnight, stretch your legs and experience Kruger from your feet instead of in a vehicle. Picnic Spots are great for this too, and one of Shikwari’s favourites is the Tshokwane Picnic Site.
The Tshokwane Picnic Site
Tshokwane Picnic Site is located on the main road between Satara Rest Camp and Skukuza Rest Camp (H1-3).
The Picnic Site has a Kruger Parks Shop filled with many souvenirs and snacks. They have plenty of seating areas outside under large trees and one can hire a gas barbecue to cook.
If your not in the cooking mood, there is a lovely restaurant on site that sells incredible and authentic South Africa food such as Roostekoek, Jaffle and their famous “must try” Buffalo Pie!

The Picnic Spot is sparkling clean and welcomes not just the humans but monkeys, birds and even elephants!
There are running water toilets on site that are well maintained and clean.
Tshokwane offers the lovely opportunity to bird watch as the birds rest in the trees above and come down regularly to the ground to feast off of left over crumbs.
Whether your stopping for a quick bite and toilet break or a relaxing afternoon barbecuing under the trees, Tshokwane has much to offer, and we would personally recommend it to all visitors.
